In this episode of Sex in Color, we step into the theme of Pleasure, Power, and Purpose—a phrase rooted in the Sunflower Expo’s mission and a perfect foundation for this season of Pleasure Futurism.

I’m joined by Malia Lazu, a certified sex therapy practitioner, award-winning strategist, and the founder of Sunflower Spa, a sexual wellness sanctuary designed to empower womxn of all backgrounds and help them reclaim their pleasure and confidence. A former DEI business consultant and MIT Sloan lecturer, Malia spent years working with leaders before realizing she wanted to create impact beyond the corporate world—supporting communities of color in a different way. Her early career included political organizing, and today her mission is rooted in one powerful truth: pleasure is political.

Together, we explore why so many high-achieving Black women struggle to connect to pleasure, how survival mode disconnects us from our bodies, and why pleasure—and rest—are forms of resistance. We also share practical techniques for slowing down, reconnecting, and building a pleasure practice that feels intentional, embodied, and liberating.

Malia creates sex-positive classes, pop-up events, workshops, and retreats exploring pleasure, sexual health, menopause, and healing across generations. She has been recognized as one of Essence Magazine’s “50 Founders to Watch” (2017), one of Boston Business Journal’s “Women Who Mean Business” (2019), and one of Boston Magazine’s “100 Most Influential Bostonians” (2021).
