Love, Loss, and the Law: The Rachel Waters Story
EPISODE 15 • SEASON 6 00:51:04

In 2025, Rachel Waters made national headlines after being indicted on two counts of murder following her mother’s hospice death in Columbia County, Georgia — charges so severe they carried the possibility of the death penalty.

But what the world didn’t see was the truth behind the headlines.

Rachel’s story began in 2020, when she became an only-child caregiver for her mother battling Alzheimer’s disease and multiple myeloma (cancer). In July 2023, she and her husband rushed from New York to Georgia after learning her mother was “actively dying.” Within hours of her mother’s passing, Rachel was accused of administering a “lethal dose” of morphine — the same medication commonly issued in hospice comfort kits to relieve pain and ease breathing at the end of life.

After the Georgia Bureau of Investigation reviewed new evidence and medical findings, all charges were dismissed in August 2025, clearing Rachel’s name and exposing deep flaws in how caregiver actions are interpreted in hospice settings.

Now, Rachel is turning her trauma into advocacy — fighting for end-of-life caregiver protections, patient rights, and hospice system reform to ensure other families aren’t left vulnerable in their darkest hours.
